Dental implants are a modern method of replacing missing natural teeth. The idea was originally conceived by a Swedish surgeon in the early 60’s, and now they have become a routine and highly predictable form of treatment with high success rates. Implants are placed daily at our practice. Mr Murray has 30 years’ experience and places more than 800 implants per year.
What are Implants
Implants are made from surgically pure titanium, which also has a proven track record in hip and joint replacements. They are placed into the bone under the gum and perform a similar function to natural tooth roots. Implants are small and hidden from view inside the mouth.
Many people have just one or two missing teeth leaving unsightly gaps or perhaps they wear a small plastic or metal denture. With implants there may no longer be a need for a gap or denture.
Implants can also be used to help secure conventional dentures in the mouth. Loose lower dentures can be a thing of the past!
What can Implants do?
Implants can be used to anchor artificial teeth in the mouth. This means that crowns(caps) and bridges can be fixed into the mouth where teeth are missing. A common problem for denture wearers is the full lower denture with no grip. Just two implants in the mouth with small retentive anchors inside the denture can overcome this.
What does treatment involve?
The first step is a consultation for you to discuss your needs and wishes. A written plan tailored to your individual requirements is subsequently provided encompassing full details of your treatment.
Placing implants is a minor procedure performed in the dental surgery with a local anaesthetic. After about two months the implants will have integrated and can then be used to anchor artificial teeth.
Read About Mr Murray
Our practice is a centre of excellence and the new implant suite is state of the art.
Mr Graham Murray had always wanted to be a dentist from a young age and originally from London graduated from Birmingham dental school in 1985.
After some time as an intern at the Bellevue hospital in New York he came to work as a junior doctor in the oral surgery department of the Coventry and Warwickshire hospitals. Realising the limitations that national health service treatments could offer his patients Graham came to work in private practice with Mr Gren Campbell at Daventry road in 1987 and at the same time was a clinical tutor to final year students back at Birmingham. Teaching is one of his great loves and we often mentor colleagues who seek more experience in the field.
With his surgical skills Graham has steadily developed an implant referral practice within the practice and now heads a dedicated implant team. Thousands of implant cases have been completed over the years and more than 100 local colleagues refer patients to us for treatment.
All aspects of dental implant treatments are provided and we can offer oral sedation for more apprehensive patients.
Graham has attended and run postgraduate courses in implantology all over the world and now trains local colleagues who have an interest in implantology.
He is a regional mentor for the Straumann (ITI) implant company and was committee member for the West Midlands for six years on the board of Association of Dental Implantology in London.
